“And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colors, in which there is healing for mankind; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.” (Qur’an 16:68-69)

The natural and pure sweetness of honey is an important source of food for us, which Allah has provided. He has done this through his creation of a tiny insect, the honeybee.

Honey is not only a delicious food, but can also be used as medicine. Allah’s messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has told us that honey can heal a variety of medicinal problems. The importance of honey as a medicine is seen in the hadeeth where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Make use of the two remedies: honey and the Qur’an.”

Today, research in medicine is only beginning to learn these qualities of honey. Research has shown that honey blocks the growth of oral bacteria – while for hundreds of years honey and lemon have been used for sore throats.

Research has also shown that honey works in the treatment of stomach ulcers – while we have known that through a prophetic tradition where a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) because his brother had a stomach disorder. Allah’s messenger (peace be upon him) prescribed honey, which cured him.

Honey can also be used to treat various wounds and infections because of its antimicrobial properties (attacks bacteria, viruses and fungi).

Honey is also an antioxidant. This means that it helps bloods circulate better and provide more oxygen to parts of the body, like the brain.

New uses for honey as a medicine are still being uncovered today by research, but researchers are not sure why honey heals.

Honey contains different sugars, minerals (like magnesium, potassium, calcium, sulfur and iron) and vitamins (like C, B1, B2, B6, B5 and B3). The contents are different in different kinds of honey because of the different flowers where the bees collect nectar.

Compared to sugar, honey has 40 percent less calories. So it gives a lot of energy to the body, without adding as much weight as sugar. People who have diabetes, heart disease and those who are overweight often use pure honey as a safe sweetener.

Bees make much more honey than they need for food. This shows us that honey was made as a benefit for mankind. Honey and the bees that produce it are another of Allah’s countless miracles of this world.
